The Graduate Certificate in Early Music Performance Practice provides graduate music majors with the option of tailoring their coursework and medium ensemble participation to focus on the research and performance of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music. Successful completion of this course of study culminates in the granting of the certificate upon graduation.
The certificate is especially recommended for musicology, theory, choral, or vocal/instrumental students who would like to make early music their main emphasis.
In order to qualify for the certificate, graduate music students must choose 15 credits of coursework from the list provided below. Many of these courses also count toward the history and theory portion of your degree plan. In addition, students pursuing the certificate must take MUHL5322, Introduction to Early Music Performance Practice, and they must commit to at least three semesters of enrollment in the Texas Tech Early Music Ensemble. The Early Music Ensemble meets every semester; MUHL 5322 is taught on a rotation (in other words, not every semester), so the student is encouraged to take it as early as possible in their program.
Note: Students wishing to supplement their certificate coursework with applied lessons in early instruments should consult with Prof. Mariani. The Texas Tech School of Music owns a variety of early instruments, but does not yet have an applied performance program in Early Music; however, we do bring in clinicians and specialists, and can help find workshops and additional technical instruction for those students interested in expanding their early music performance activities beyond the scope of the Certificate.
